Week of October 26 - November 1

Science, Writing, Reading
Studying Magents this week.
Experiment 1: Asked Faith to look at each item I show her and say whether she thought it would be attracted to the magnet. We listed the items on a chalkboard under Attracted/Magnetic or Not Attracted/Not Magnetic. Then, she tested each item. She used two separate colored sheets of paper to list the items in each group as she tested them. She also wrote what it was made of (penny--metal, jar--glass, twig--wood). Then we discussed the results.

Experiment 2: Discovered that magnets attract through other objects, but only up to a certain thickness. We tested it with paper, a shirt, our finger, a pillow, a 2x4 wood beam.

Experiment 3: Making a magnet. Building your own compass. Discussed north and south poles of magnets and also the earth. Reviewed properties of magnets: north attracts south, etc. Rubbed the magnet on a straight pin in a single direction to magnetize the pin. Placed the pin on the sticky side of a foam craft sticker and floated it on water in a bowl. Observed that the two ends of the pin point toward North and South even when turned. Observed that the pin reacted to magnets from much farther away than usual.

Experiment 4: Learned that magnetic attraction can pass along from one pin to another, but only for a certain number of pins before the attraction becomes too weak. Used a magnet to collect pins end to end. Were able to pick up only 6.

Reading
A House for Hermit Crab, by Eric Carle.

Faith read pgs 1-44 of The Case of The Hungry Stranger, by Bonsall. She has really enjoyed this book so far. I think that is because it's a mystery and has a more complex plot that the usual easy reader books that she has read. She can't wait to turn the page. Yea for Faith being excited about reading a book!

Science, Bible Study
Currently, I'm reading Case for Creation, by Lee Strobel. Faith asked me what the book was about. This opened up a discussion about evolution and creation. From there, we began talking about space, the solar system, galaxies and the universe. I showed Faith several short videos on the internet that depict what it would be like to travel (visually) from our planet, through the solar system, our galaxy, our galaxy cluster, and into the outer reaches of the universe. She was fascinated by this. We looked at many pictures of what our galaxy (a spiral galaxy) is shaped like, and compared it to other galaxies. We also discussed what a theory is.

Geography
Faith asked, "Where is Spain?" while watching me fix a spanish fan that a friend brought home from a trip to that country. So, we got out the globe and identified Spain. We reviewed the difference between a state and a country. Faith learned to identify islands as a landmass completely surrounded by water. We did an exercise with her finding different islands on the globe, and also with me asking her if particular places were islands or not.

History
We discussed how the spanish language came from Spain and eventually spread over most of Central and South America. Then we identified Portugal and Brazil and discussed the spread of Portugese in a similar manner.

Science, Geography
We reviewed where the Equator and the North and South Poles are. Then we discussed whether a country's climate was "warm" or "cold" by it's proximity to these areas.

Math, Geography
Exercise: Using a piece of string, measure the distance between Tallahassee, FL and Spain, Hawaii, the Equator, and the North Pole. Then draw each distance using the string on the chart provided. Measure each line in inches using a ruler and write the answer next to it. Which place is the farthest away from Tallahassee? Which place is closest?
Faith also learned how to write the term "1/2" while doing the exercise.

Math, Art, Writing, Reading

Saturday, February 16, 2008

Science
Gardening project: Went and bought a variety of seeds today. We cut the bottoms off of juice bottles and drilled holes in them for seed pots. Talked about why the hole is necessary for water drainage. Then Faith filled the pots with organic gardening soil. We sowed each type of seed in it's own container. Faith noted the variety of shapes, sizes, and colors of the seeds. We made labels for the plants by writing the names on popsicle sticks and poking them into the soil. Faith watered them with a spray bottle and then we set the containers on a tray (a lid to a large bin) for easy transportation in and out of the house. We also added the coleus cuttings that we made in the fall to the group.
