Week of October 26 - November 1

Science, Writing, Reading
Studying Magents this week.
Experiment 1: Asked Faith to look at each item I show her and say whether she thought it would be attracted to the magnet. We listed the items on a chalkboard under Attracted/Magnetic or Not Attracted/Not Magnetic. Then, she tested each item. She used two separate colored sheets of paper to list the items in each group as she tested them. She also wrote what it was made of (penny--metal, jar--glass, twig--wood). Then we discussed the results.

Experiment 2: Discovered that magnets attract through other objects, but only up to a certain thickness. We tested it with paper, a shirt, our finger, a pillow, a 2x4 wood beam.

Experiment 3: Making a magnet. Building your own compass. Discussed north and south poles of magnets and also the earth. Reviewed properties of magnets: north attracts south, etc. Rubbed the magnet on a straight pin in a single direction to magnetize the pin. Placed the pin on the sticky side of a foam craft sticker and floated it on water in a bowl. Observed that the two ends of the pin point toward North and South even when turned. Observed that the pin reacted to magnets from much farther away than usual.

Experiment 4: Learned that magnetic attraction can pass along from one pin to another, but only for a certain number of pins before the attraction becomes too weak. Used a magnet to collect pins end to end. Were able to pick up only 6.

Read Magnets, by Parker.

Art
Made magnet paintings. Taped a piece of paper over a plastic bin lid (propped up on two jars). Then, dipped different objects in paint, placed them on the paper, and used the magnet underneath to drag the object/paint around.
