Density Experiment. Filled two glasses with fresh water. Dissolved salt in one glass of water. Discussed which one was more dense, molecules, atoms. Added an egg to each to see that the egg floated in the salt water and sank in the unsalted water. Talked about the Dead Sea.

Studying the rainforest this week.

Closer Look at The Rainforest, by Wood. Learned What is a Rainforest? Where are Rainforests? Deforestation. Endangered Species/Extinction.

Science, Life Skills
Went outdoors to experience a hands-on view of deforestation and erosion. Our yard is an example. The side is sloped with little vegetation. In the last several years, the dirt has been eroding. Tree roots are now visible that were not visible before. We are filling it back in with more dirt, but the rain will wash it away if we do not plant something on it (like grass or ground cover plants). Faith got to help with this.

Family Bible Study. Faith copied the verse of the day on her own paper.

Reading, History, Geography
Began reading The Little House on the Prairie, by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Faith is really enjoying this series and looks forward to the new chapter every evening. We looked on the globe to map out where they lived in the Big Woods book and are following the path they are taking across the states to their new home.

Began working on counting/adding coins again this week. Practiced counting real coins each day. Took turns coming up with combinations of coins to count.
Worksheet: Pay for it with coins. Look at the price of each item. Draw the fewest coins to pay for it.
Worksheet: Shopping at the store. How much does each item cost? What is the total cost of 2 items?
Worksheet: Which amount is Less? Look at the two ways to show money. Write the amount for each way. Circle the lesser amount.

Week of January 4-10

Geography, Science
Learning about China! Faith's grandparents are traveling to China to adopt a child. We have been following their travels by looking at maps, globes, and books. Each day we check their location in the world and find out what kind of weather they are experiencing there.

Math, Social Studies, Language Studies
We have been learning to count in Mandarin Chinese from 1-10 this week. Also learning some other common phrases in Chinese. Like, Hello (Ni hao).

History, Geography, Social Studies, Reading
Countries of the World, Welcome to China, by Costain and Collins.
Chapters 1-6 of the Magic Tree House: Day of the Dragon King, by Mary Pope Osborne. We looked up the first emperor of China on the internet to learn about him. Also the Great Wall of China history and pictures.

Bible Study, Reading, Writing
Began reading a daily devotional this week. Faith continues to copy a verse each day.

Math
Worksheet: Fractions. Learning to recognize fractions such as 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 6/8. Also discussed what a whole is equal to (2/2, 3/3, 5/5).
Worksheet: Fractions: Color the fraction part of the shape.

Reading, Science
Groundhog Gets a Say, by Swallow. A picturebook all about groundhogs.
Deputy Harvey and the Ant Cow Caper, by Sneed. A picturebook story that includes facts about the relationship between ants and ant cows/aphids.

Faith read Nate the Great on the Owl Express, by Sharmat.

Life Skills, Social Studies
Learned about what kinds of foods are eaten in China. I taught Faith how to cook some Chinese food. We made authentic stir-fry vegetables and rice. She really enjoyed chopping and stirring.

This morning's study was on the verse Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." Faith copied the verse.

Reading, Writing
Worksheet: Write a word from the box with the beginning sound "cl" that best completes the sentences.
Worksheet: Color the crayons with words that begin with the blend "cr."
Draw a circle aroun all the words in the story that begin with the blend "dr."

Math
Use the calendar to find out when someone leave for camp, write the answer.

The Ugly Vegetables, by Grace Lin. Learned about vegetables from China and how they are prepared for soup.

Eyewitness Books Arctic & Antarctic, by Taylor. Learned about land animals & plants, sea life, explorers, native people, tundra, ice, food chains, etc.

Project: Glued a map of the world onto a large sheet of paper. Faith pasted labels on the map (North Pole, South Pole, Arctic, Antarctic). Then cut out prints of different kinds of animals that we learned about today. Faith colored some of the animals and then discussed where they lived and glued them to the paper in the corresponding region.

Geography
Faith asked, "Where is Spain?" while watching me fix a spanish fan that a friend brought home from a trip to that country. So, we got out the globe and identified Spain. We reviewed the difference between a state and a country. Faith learned to identify islands as a landmass completely surrounded by water. We did an exercise with her finding different islands on the globe, and also with me asking her if particular places were islands or not.

History
We discussed how the spanish language came from Spain and eventually spread over most of Central and South America. Then we identified Portugal and Brazil and discussed the spread of Portugese in a similar manner.

Science, Geography
We reviewed where the Equator and the North and South Poles are. Then we discussed whether a country's climate was "warm" or "cold" by it's proximity to these areas.

Math, Geography
Exercise: Using a piece of string, measure the distance between Tallahassee, FL and Spain, Hawaii, the Equator, and the North Pole. Then draw each distance using the string on the chart provided. Measure each line in inches using a ruler and write the answer next to it. Which place is the farthest away from Tallahassee? Which place is closest?
Faith also learned how to write the term "1/2" while doing the exercise.

Math, Art, Writing, Reading
Exercise: Using your ruler, find something that is 3 inches long in your room. Draw a picture of it and label the picture. Faith found a shell and drew an excellent representation of it. She spelled the word "shell" on her paper.

Science
Worked some more on our garden project. We found more containers to use for planting seeds. Faith filled them with soil, chose two kinds of seeds, sowed them, and watered them.
